Symptoms

Symptoms of coeliac disease can vary, according to the amount and duration of intestinal damage.

The symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can be non-specific making it difficult to diagnose. Symptoms include:

  • Abdominal bloating and pain

  • Diarrhoea

  • Constipation

  • Vomiting

Some people may have no symptoms at all, however they can still have intestinal damage, and the failure to absorb nutrients can lead to other problems such as:

  • Anaemia

  • Fatigue

  • Osteoporosis

  • Infertility

In children the disease can lead to slowed growth or growth failure. Children with a parent or sibling with coeliac disease should be screened.
